Plundering the planet has re-emerged as the face of U.S. foreign policy. Echoing earlier eras of American imperialism and militarism, the Trump administration seizes oil, rare earth minerals, land and power, while overthrowing governments and destroying communities that may stand in the way.
An administration that promised to stay out of “forever wars” now stands perpetually on the verge of starting one or more. Meanwhile, violence abroad is matched by state terror at home. All of this has roots in a history of American empire as old as the nation itself.
Historians Greg Grandin and Nikhil Pal Singh will discuss the resurgence of what was once called "gunboat diplomacy," how it builds on and differs from earlier forms of imperial domination, and how we might fight back.
